The top of the light has a large split ring that is attached to a large alligator clip for hanging. I removed the clip and added a large black outdoor "S" hook, to me they look better and it's easier to hang with an S hook than the clip, especially if you're hanging the light from a tree branch that is a bit too wide for the clip to handle.You can also use the clips and hang them off of umbrellas, or attach a wire under the eaves of the house and hang them there.
This is not a light for blasting high lumens into an area. It's just a little light for adding a subtle lanterny touch to a porch or other outdoor area. The little LED light is programmed to flicker, making it look a lot like a flickering candle. This may sound like a small thing, but it adds some cute and subtle style to this light.
There's an on/off switch on the bottom that needs to be turned on, naturally. Each unit I got came with some juice in the battery, so they all lit up right away since I was doing this near dusk. The light emitted from the lanterns isn't all too substantial, but does cast a little light. This is more for decorative effect than to light a patio or anything like that. Though 10 of them all together, does cast a nice, soothing glow.
